Fermi LAT Observations of the Pulsar Wind Nebula HESS J1640-465
Abstract
HESS J1640-465 is an extended source of very high energy gamma-ray emission for which subsequent studies identify nebular X-ray emission surrounding a compact object. This establishes the system as a pulsar wind nebula that resides in the radio supernova remnant G338.3-0.0. Like several other such systems, the properties suggest a middle-aged PWN for which the large extent and a low magnetic field result in emission that is weak in X-rays but bright in gamma-rays. Here we report on the detection of HESS J1640-465 in Fermi LAT observations. We show that the spectrum is consistent with emission from other PWNe, and place constraints on the evolution of the system based on these results.
